The Airfield is, in my opinion, one of the best grounds in the Welsh pyramid, the only slight gripe being the pitch being 3G rather than grass. This modern stadium sits beside Hawarden Airport and features retractable floodlights due to the working runway behind the Gardner Aerospace Academy Stand behind one of the goals.
The stand itself sits off-centre behind the goals, with covered seating and without any supporting pillars. Behind the opposite goal is an uncovered area of flat standing.
Down one side you have another modern, covered, all-seater stand, although this one does have supporting pillars. This stand sits on the halfway line, with the club’s name on display on its roof.
The opposite side of the ground has the changing rooms, dugouts, toilets, and an very good snack bar serving hot food, and hot and cold drinks (non-alcoholic).
There is plenty of free parking close to the ground owing to the car parks that are part of the Airbus facility, and also very close to the ground is Broughton Shopping Park and even a McDonalds if you’re feeling that way inclined.
In 2014, the club replaced their grass surface with an artificial 3G pitch, and as 3G pitches go, this is one of the better ones. With the facilities at the ground and close by, a visit to The Airfield is in my experience, a good day out.
